The following Statement of Purpose was composed by the group of founding volunteers of OLU and published on OLU's first website in September, 1997.

O.L.U., “Organization for Lukumi Unity” is a non profit cultural organization formed by Olorishas, Babalawos and Aleyos who share a dream.... to see all practitioners of the Lukumi Culture and Religion come together in brotherhood!

It is our belief that the Lukumi culture and religion has a strong role to play in facilitating the spiritual, moral and social evolution of humanity, and as part of our purpose as a cultural organization, we plan to pursue the following objectives:

Promote unity between initiates, devotees and representatives of the Lukumi Culture and Religion.

Support institutions and organizations that represent the ethics and principles of the Lukumi Culture and Religion with integrity.

Ensure the preservation of the Lukumi religious and cultural traditions throughout the Diaspora.

Share the wisdom of the Lukumi Culture in an ethically correct manner , in order to make a positive contribution to the evolution of the human culture worldwide.

We are in the process of networking at a national level as well as with Lukumi brothers and sisters in the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and throughout the rest of the world. As means of communications we will be using face to face meetings, the telephone, Internet and mail. It is our intention to create a solid base of support at a local level, which in turn can support larger associations of people at a national and international level. To achieve our objectives, we plan to sponsor special events such as conferences, gatherings, artistic exhibitions and other activities that reflect aspects of Lukumi culture.

The Lukumi religion is rapidly spreading throughout the world. This growth presents great opportunities as well as challenges. Unity is needed to encourage cohesion, survival and growth of the heritage, ethics and wisdom of our ancestors. The Orishas have expressed through Odu and during physical manifestations, their desire to see unity among its children, and have given us their blessing for the formation of this organization. Efforts at unity have been unsuccessfully attempted in the past, as the time was not yet right. Now however, as the Orishas have indicated, the time has arrived. We must not let the failures of the past detain us, but learn from past failures. We can no longer afford the luxury of apathy!

The Orishas no longer want the Lukumi Religion to remain hidden. It is time that the world at large takes note of us! It is time that the Lukumi religion takes its visible and rightful place among the world's great religions!
